The Blacksburg Junior Women’s Club was formed in November, 1935 by a small group of local ladies who wanted to give back to their community as well as strengthen social ties. The group originally had 13 members. The club became a member of the Virginia Federation of Women’s Clubs in February, 1936. The stated object of the organization was to “unite all loyal and progressive citizens in an intelligent effort toward a better Blacksburg, to promote good citizenship, public health, general culture and civic ideals.”

The object of this organization shall be to promote the cultural, educational and environmental welfare of the region through service projects, outreach, and other charitable activities.  The GFWC/BJWC is a member of both the Virginia Federation of Women's Clubs and the General Federation of Women's Clubs and as such will align their objectives with the objectives of these organizations.

Today, the club has over 40 members and supports a variety of projects.

The Blacksburg Junior Women's Club (BJWC) hosts a fundraiser every year, called March of Ales. This year we had to change and do an online event due to COVID-19.  The money raised from this event goes back to our community in many different ways, such as scholarships for local high school students, direct donations to many non-profits and  donations to help cover expenses for local families who are going through a tough patch.

Some of our favorite projects we support include:

  • The Cinderella Project - Partnered with the YMCA at VT, this project helps provide prom attire to those who normally couldn't afford it. This includes dresses, suits, shoes, ties, jewelry and clutches. The YMCA at VT turns a room into a boutique creates a positive shopping environment for these families. We have served over 150 students in the past 2 years!
  • Last Minuet Angels - Members gather the angels left on the Christmas trees a few days before Christmas and purchase items for these kids. A jacket, hat and mittens are also given to the kids.
  • Cornerstone Project - Cornerstone apartment complex is run by the Women's Resource Center for women and children escaping domestic violence. Twice a year BJWC "adopts" an apartment and gets it ready for a family to move into,  since they are unable to bring much at all with them.
