For I was hungry and you gave me food,

I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink,

I was a stranger and you welcomed me.

-Matthew 25:35

The Giles County Christian Service Mission, Inc. is a non-profit, inter-denominational outreach ministry that has served the residents of Giles County for almost sixty years.  Our mission is to serve, in the name of our Lord, individuals and families of Giles County, Virginia who need life’s basic necessities.

I was recently laid off and have had trouble paying my bills. The Mission helped me, and for this I’d like to say ‘thank you.'  —a Mission client

In 2023, in conjunction with our community partners, the Giles County Christian Service Mission provided:

$26,000 through our S.U.R.F. Ministry

Over $100,000 in groceries and nutritional assistance to 633 individuals representing 219 households through the 512 Food Pantry

Over $33,000 in clothing, household items, and other needs through the Voucher Program

940 Senior Food Boxes for a total value of $29,000 through the USDA Commodity Supplemental Food Program

Gifts for 205 children and adolescents through the Angel Tree ministry

Partnered with Giles County Public Schools to provide supplies for the Care Closets at Giles & Narrows High Schools and reimburse teachers and staff for expenses incurred in providing clothing, school supplies, musical instrument repairs, or other items for students in need through the Giles County Learning Heroes initiative.

The 512 Food PantryIn the spring of 2021, the Mission purchased and renovated an adjacent property, allowing for the creation the 512 Food Pantry.  This new space greatly expanded the Mission’s ef\rts to eliminate food-insecurity in Giles County.  This new space also allowed the Mission to transition into a client-choice model of food distribution.

Having the opportunity to choose one's own food offers those seeking help a sense of dignity and control, limits waste (since they tend not to take food they won’t use) and allows them to tailor the assistance they receive to be the best possible fit for their own unique situation.  A large, walk-in freezer as well as additional refrigeration units have enhanced the Mission's efforts to offer healthier food items in partnership with Carilion Clinic's Community Health& Outreach at Carilion Giles Community Hospital.

Stephanie Spencer with Carilion Clinic's Community Health & Outreach offers monthly opportunities at the Mission to improve the health of the community. Our Thrift Store offers a wide variety of clothing, household items, and  furniture for sale to the general public.  We are open Tuesday-Friday from 10:00 a.m.—6:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Sales from our Thrift store, grants, and gifts from generous individuals, churches, businesses, and service organizations provide funding for the Mission.

When you shop at the Thrift Store, all sales cycle directly back into the Mission for service and outreach to the Giles community.  Everyone can help by donating clothing or household items, shopping in our store, or by sharing your time as a volunteer.

The Mission does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, gender expression, age, national origin, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status, in any of its activities or operations.
