Individuals must overcome many obstacles when returning to the community after incarceration – housing, transportation, chronic health conditions, mental health issues, and obtaining employment so they can support themselves and address criminal justice system debt. These obstacles often result in recidivism. Almost half of released prisoners are re-arrested within 1 year.
Recidivism negatively impacts incarcerated individuals, their families and children, the victims of their crimes, and the entire community. It costs over $30,000 a year to house an inmate. Successful reentry means taxpayer dollars can be redirected to meet other community needs and ex-offenders are contributing to the economy, not incarcerated and depleting resources.
Life Path significantly reduces recidivism by providing participants case management, life coaching, personalized education and training, and income through employment with Goodwill. Life Path participants are also provided training for well-paid careers in industries that have a track record of offering ex-offenders opportunities. Goodwill’s reentry participants are launching successful careers in culinary arts, information technology, advanced manufacturing and machining, and a variety of skilled trades.
Goodwill Industries of the Valleys' mission is helping people and families in our community achieve a better life through work and independence. Goodwill provides community-based employment and training services for individuals with disabilities and disadvantages, including socioeconomic barriers, low education and job skills, past incarcerations, and other obstacles to success. Our goal is to empower the individuals we serve with the resources, competencies, and confidence they need to overcome obstacles and achieve successful employment outcomes.
As a social enterprise, Goodwill invests revenues from our retail stores and business services into employment and training services for individuals with disabilities and disadvantages, while offering these individuals stable employment through our retail stores and business services. The sale of donated items in Goodwill's retail stores accounts for 70% of Goodwill's operating revenue. Goodwill stretches these dollars to self-fund and subsidize services, devoting 89 cents of every dollar to the mission. While Goodwill's stores provide vital funding, net revenue does not fully address the need for Goodwill's services. Additional support is needed to increase staffing so we can serve more people.
