The Imagination Library of Montgomery County, VA is an affiliate of  Dolly Parton’s  Imagination Library.  We enroll children aged 0-5 who then receive a free high quality, age-appropriate book each month until their fifth birthday.  These books are mailed to the home and do not need to be returned.  Building this library in the home helps provide a stimulating family environment to foster a love of books and reading. This facilitates literacy as it supports the backbone of early education.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library provides the administrative support.  They engage early education specialists to select the books, negotiate with the publisher to get the best price, maintain the list of children to whom a book is mailed each month, and mail the books.  They bill us for the books mailed and then reduce it by 50% because the Commonwealth of Virginia offsets half of the book costs.

We raise funds to cover our share of book costs and we enroll children.  Fundraising takes many forms such as  grants, individual donations and donations from community groups.  The cost of books to us is very low, (1.10 a book)  compared with the market price of books which is $12.00 per book.

Enrollment can be through nursery schools, libraries, community events or at community locations such as recreation centers, churches, hospitals, pediatricians, street fairs and more.  We have a committed network of volunteers who are making these connections and facilitating enrollment.
