Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center is a state and federally licensed wildlife veterinary hospital and rehabilitation facility with a goal of conservation and release. Our facility is 1 of only 3 in the state of Virginia that can treat threatened and endangered species. We have been operating since 2002, and in that time, we've treated more than 28,000 wildlife patients!
Last year alone we treated more than 2,750+ patients made up of 260+ different species. However, year after year, our patient intake numbers continue to climb and with that so do our costs. We receive no federal or state money, but rely on donations to continue providing care to these amazing animals. We are beyond grateful for your support and our patients are even more appreciative. They can't speak for themselves, but making a donation it means you can hear their call for help.
Our mission is to conserve Virginia’s wildlife through rehabilitation and release while teaching care and respect of native species. We also advocate for the protection of wildlife and wild places to ensure these magnificent animals have a place alongside us for generations to come. Our team is made up of several volunteers, interns, more than a dozen staff consisting of veterinarian technicians and veterinarians.
Our facility specializes in native Virginia wildlife, with a strong emphasis on birds of prey (eagles, owls, hawks, falcons, etc...), waterfowl (herons, ducks, and shorebirds, etc...), and migratory birds (Hummingbirds, Chimney Swifts, etc...), amphibians and reptiles (newts, salamanders, frogs, turtles, etc...), and many mammals (Black bears, squirrels, Virginia opossums, eastern cottontail rabbits, American red foxes, etc...). We also treat many endangered and threatened species of wildlife.
Wild animal populations are in a rapid decline; since 1970 the world has lost more than 3 billion birds! Wildlife rehabbers like us rely on donations to do our work. Without organizations like ours the number of wild animals would decline even faster. By donating you're giving hope in an otherwise dire situation. Wildlife have no health insurance, so your donation helps us give them the care they wouldn't otherwise receive. When we see them released back into the wild you can see that they're forever grateful!
We're always in need of help. GiveLocalNRV raises only a small fraction of the money we need to make it through the year. We always need certain items like fresh produce, insects, cleaning supplies, etc... For a full list of general items that we always need please click HERE. Finally, if you're interested in becoming a volunteer, animal transporter, or applying for our internship program you can find that information HERE.
