We need places to remember who we truly are and where we can learn how to better love this world.

When I was a child, we had an unusual rock in our front yard. It had strange caverns with little sparkling rocks in them. I would sit for hours digging those rocks out with a stick from our willow tree. I would head in at sun down, and, the next day, I would be back at work harvesting glitter. To this day, I have no idea what I did with those rocks. I think I just found joy in the harvesting.

In my forties, I went back to visit that house. I had to see that giant rock for myself to know that it was real. As I approached our old house, there it was, the cavernous rock sitting in the manicured landscape right outside the front door. As I got closer, I could see that every single little glittering rock was gone. Every cavern in the boulder was empty. With my little hands, I had dug out every single one of those sparkly stones.

Harvesting glitter is what I am good at. I am motivated by the light that shines in the dark. I come by my determination honestly. Many have taught me how to keep going, especially my parents. Persistence is in my blood. In 2014, I began the most important work of my life. I wanted to see what would happen if a community devoted itself to taking care of Life in one place over time. With an inspiring group of people in the Blue Ridge Mountains, I started Springhouse, a school where we practice taking better care of Life, starting with our own.  It's been 10 years now. We have persisted and are clearer and more determined than ever to serve our mission of fundamentally transforming education to move toward our vision of a thriving world.

This work is my calling. It is my deep joy. I hope you will support the vision and mission of this intergenerational vitality-centered learning community we call Springhouse and the many other places that will start around the world in the years to come.  I have no doubt that these kinds of places are what we need most in the world.

Thank you so much.
