The VMCVM Class of 1990 Shelter Veterinarian Scholarship Fund was established in 2020 in memory of Dr. Susan Hall and Dr. Laura Bogert, who both received their doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) degrees from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. The Class of 1990 alumni established the scholarship to support VMCVM students pursuing a career in shelter medicine, following in the footsteps of Drs. Hall and Bogert.
Dr. Susan Hall was a beloved veterinarian at Centreville Animal Hospital in Fairfax County where she was known for rescuing, treating, and caring for animals. She was president of the Emergency Veterinary Clinic of Northern Virginia in Vienna, Va, and a member of the DC Academy of Veterinary Medicine, the Northern Virginia VMA, the Virginia VMA, and the AAHA. She was also appointed to the Advisory Board of Fairfax County Animal Shelter, and was known by her friends and colleagues as a passionate advocate for all animals. She passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer in 1999. You can read more about Dr. Hall here.
Dr. Laura Bogert graduated from the VMCVM in 1990 and owned and operated the North Cape Animal Clinic in Fort Myers, FL from 1996 to 2016. She had a passion for healing animals, with special emphasis on providing dental care. She was known for her love of travel and spending time outdoors hiking, kayaking, and gardening. The The VMCVM Class of 1990 Shelter Veterinarian Scholarship Fund is a component fund of the Community Foundation of the New River Valley and contributions are tax deductible. Gifts can be made through this site of by check to CFNRV with "VMCVM Class of 1990 Scholarship" in the memo line. Please mail checks to PO Box 6009, Christiansburg, VA 24068-6009. The scholarship is open to students at VMCVM pursuing a career in shelter medicine. The online scholarship application opens each October with a deadline in early February.
