The Community Foundation of the New River Valley (CFNRV) hosts the GiveLocalNRV virtual fundraising platform all year for nonprofits serving the New River Valley. The signature event for this initiative is our annual giving day, which harnesses the generosity of our community by raising funds and awareness for nonprofits serving our region during the month of June.
The online event culminates in a 24-hour period of giving with incentive grants and prizes funded by sponsors. Since 2014, the event has raised nearly $3.6 million for local nonprofits.
This year, the 11th annual giving day will be held starting at noon on Wednesday, June 26 and ending at noon on Thursday, June 27.

Donations can be made via debit card, credit card, PayPal, Venmo, ApplePay, Google Pay and your bank account (ACH) through www.givelocalnrv.org. MasterCard, Visa, Discover and American Express are accepted.
For donations over $50, the website gives you the option of submitting payment through your bank account. This could save you and/or the benefiting organization on transaction fees. For donors that give via their bank account, credit card processing fees will be replaced by a 1% transaction fee, plus a $1.50 fixed fee per transaction (total ACH processing fees will be capped at $5.00), platform fee will still apply.
What are the fees when I make a donation?
The GiveLocalNRV platform charges fees for online donation: 5.9% of the donation + .30 cents for each transaction. By having every donor chip in a small amount, everyone contributes to helping support this community-wide event. What do the fees go toward?
A donor can choose to not pay the fees. In this case, the fees will be deducted from the donation and the organization will receive the rest of the donation. For example, if a donor wants to give $100 and does not want to pay the $6.20 in fees, the organization will receive a total of $93.80 from that transaction.
Why do I have a charge from MCF or Mightycause?
Mightycause partners with the CFNRV to host this online fundraising platform for the GiveLocalNRV giving day. All transactions on the givelocalnrv.org website are processed through Mightycause, so your credit card or bank statement will reflect that.
Can I make my GiveLocalNRV donation early?
Yes! Starting on June 1, donors will be able to make their donations, while still having it count toward GiveLocalNRV. You can also donate to organizations on the site year-round, though only donations from June 1 to June 27 at noon count towards Giving Day totals. Note that you can also direct your Qualified Charitable Distribution towards the Giving Day for your organization(s) of choice, provided the actual distribution and allocation to the organization(s) happens during the June 1 - June 27 at noon window.
The online event culminates in a 24-hour period of giving with incentive grants and prizes funded by sponsors. Donors are encouraged to support their favorite organizations with a donation of $5 or more to help those organizations reach their goals. Since 2014, the event has raised nearly $3.6 million for local nonprofits.
Is there a minimum or maximum donation?
The minimum donation for GiveLocalNRV is $5. There is no maximum donation limit.
I'm trying to pay via ACH (directly through my bank account.) What is Plaid?
The option to pay by bank account is provided through a secure third party service called Plaid. Plaid is our highly vetted technology partner for secure financial account connections. They not only serve the Mightycause platform but many major financial applications and organizations with millions of clients, such as Venmo and American Express. You can read more about their safety and security policy here: https://plaid.com/safety/.Mightycause does not store or have access to any of your banking login credentials if you choose to use this payment method.
Do I need a user account to donate?
No, you do not need to create an account to make a donation. However, if you plan to give multiple times during GiveLocalNRV, creating an account means you only have to enter your information once. Your account also collects your tax receipts in one location and enables you to track your donation, review the charities your support and schedule future giving. You can log in to your user account with the email address used to make your donations.
Can I fundraise for my favorite nonprofit?
Yes! You can be an ambassador for the cause(s) you care about and set up your own personalized fundraising page. To get started, you can visit the Organization Page of any nonprofit listed on GiveLocalNRV and click “Fundraise” to start the page creation process. Please note that in order to create a Fundraising Page you will be prompted to sign into your user account or create one if you don’t already have an account.
When individuals donate for GiveLocalNRV, who receives their information?
The nonprofit organization receiving the donation will receive the contact information for the donor in order to conduct follow up communications, unless the donor chooses to make an anonymous donation. As the hosts, CFNRV will also be able to view the information. Occasionally, our team sends emails to previous GiveLocalNRV donors about the event, but this does not add you to any of the regular CFNRV email lists. Additionally, we will not share your information.
What should I do if I need help?
If you are having an issue with the website or with making a donation, start by submitting a help request to the Mightycause team at https://support.mightycause.com/hc/en-us/requests/new.
